Young talents win composition battle

Write something for 2 to 7 trombones and join the composition competition of Slid Factory. This invitation to composers around the world provided more than 125 entries. The jury, consisting of Johan de Meij, Martijn Padding, George Wiegel and the New Trombone Collective, selected the seven best compositions.

On Friday April 15 the 7 works received their world premiere. With great enthusiasm the public voted for The seven trombones of the apocalypse, the work of the 18-year-old Santi Miguel form Spain. The jury prize was awarded to the 19 year old Christian Overhead from England for his first composition for trombones, Amid a kaleidoscopic mist.

After the intermission The Houdinis and James Morrison played a dazzling jazz program. Everyone's mouth dropped open when James Morrison played the trumpet accompanied by himself on the piano in the song Basin' Street Blues.

The festival agenda was developing all the time in preparation for the festival. Latest changes: the Super Trombones will do a Meet & Greet after their lunch concert on Saturday and it's Happy Hour on Saturday from 18.00 - 19.00 with the Wiener Posaunen Quartett. All starting times and festival components are now final. Be sure and check the programme for the complete list of activities.

Song for Japan on Slide Factory

Slide Factory wants to do something for the victims of the earthquakes and the tsunami in Japan. One of our Japanese friends, Takashi Shinagawa started a project. A specially composed piece by Steven Verhelst, Song for Japan, will be played by trombonists all over the world. We are going to play this Song on the Schouwburgplein during the Plaza Spectacle on Saturday, April 16. If you like to join,download your part.

Sunday morning April 3 at 10 a.m. the New Trombone Collective played in the radio show Spiegelzaal at Radio 4. The 7 trombonists played pieces by Michael Nyman and Astor Pazzolla, pieces which will also be performed at their Galaconcert, April 16 on Slide Factory.

Finalists composition battle announced

After many weeks of puzzling, playing, reading, thinking, counting and enjoying all the beautiful notes composers has written for the Slide Factory composition competition its clear who the finalists are. Because of the quantity and the quality of the compositions the jury (Johan de Meij, Martijn Padding, New Trombone Collective) decided to choose 7 compositions for the finals on the 15th of April in stead of the planned 5.

The audience of the concert decides which composition wins the audience price. There's also a jury award. The finalists are:

Three amazing world quartets

In this edition Slide Factory presents lunch concerts with no less than three top trombone quartets. The famous Slokar Quartet from Swiss, the American Super Trombones and the Austrian Wiener Posaunen Quartett. At Friday afternoon at 1 a.m. the versatile and virtuoso trombonists of the Slokar Quartet will perform. On Saturday afternoon the Super Trombones together with a rhythm section ensure seductive and surprising jazz and on Sunday the four Viennese giants demonstrate their special style of ensemble playing.

Spectacular opening on April 14

Slide factory will start in a spectacular way on April 14 with the Opening Concert in the main hall of De Doelen. Among others, singer Nynke Laverman, jazz legend James Morrison and world famous trombonist Nitzan Haroz will give their best at this concert. This evening will bring all music styles, classical, new composed, world music and jazz, it is a blueprint of the festival. Single tickets € 15, - are available at De Doelen website.

125 pieces in composition battle

It was difficult to estimate. How many composers would write a unique piece for 2-7 trombones and join the composition contest of the New Trombone Collective?

The result is overwhelming. Exactly 125 pieces have arrived from all over the world. A very difficult task for the jury to select the five best compositions to be played in the Composition Battle Jazz Concert on Friday April 15. The audience votes which composition wins while being treated to a jazz spectacle of James Morrison and The Houdini's.
